What are 3PL Package and Shipment Consolidation Services?

3PL Package and Shipment Consolidation services are logistics solutions designed to simplify and optimize the shipping process for businesses managing international shipments. This service includes receiving packages from multiple sources at either an itemized or bulk level, securely storing them in a central warehouse, and then repackaging and consolidating them into a single shipment for final delivery. By reducing the number of individual packages, shipment consolidation significantly cuts shipping costs, streamlines logistics, and simplifies customs handling, making it ideal for international shipments.

These services are especially beneficial for businesses like international shipping companies, freight forwarders, and package forwarding companies serving global customers. Partnering with a 3PL provider based in a U.S. tax-free zone allows these businesses to efficiently manage and store goods while reducing logistical and operational costs.

At LASERLOGIX, we act as your outsourced warehouse partner, providing the space, expertise, and logistical support in U.S. needed to streamline your package and shipment consolidation processes.

How Our Consolidation Services Work?

Here’s a Step-by-Step Guide to How We Consolidate, Optimize, and Prepare Your Shipments

Receiving Packages from Multiple Sources

Whether clients order from multiple U.S. retailers, manufacturers, or suppliers, we centralize all items in one secure location on the itemized level, bulk or palletized, tailored to the unique needs of your business.

Itemized Packages: Once shoppers place orders online with multiple U.S. retail stores, the packages are sent individually to our warehouse, typically at an itemized level. This service is ideal for personal shopping companies and international package forwarding companies. Upon arrival, each package is carefully received, cataloged under the client’s account, and securely stored.

Palletized or Bulk Shipments: For freight forwarders and businesses handling larger quantities of goods, shipments often arrive in bulk, such as palletized goods or full container loads. Once these shipments are delivered to our warehouse, our team verifies the quantities and contents against the provided documentation, such as the Bill of Lading, Invoice, and Packing List.

We efficiently manage the receiving and storage of goods, ensuring they are fully prepared for the next step in the consolidation process.

Repackaging and Condensing

Repackaging is a key step in optimizing your shipping process, especially for international shipments where carriers often calculate costs based on dimensional weight (DIM weight). Our expert team carefully repackages your items to condense the packaging size while ensuring the safety of the contents. By minimizing box dimensions, we align DIM weight as closely as possible to the actual weight, helping you avoid unnecessary shipping costs. For example, a package with a DIM weight of 32.2 lbs can be reduced to 16.1 lbs after repackaging, translating to substantial savings on shipping fees.

Original Shipment Details:
  • Item: A set of books
  • Original Box Dimensions: 20" (L) x 16" (W) x 14" (H)
  • Actual Weight: 18 lbs
  • DIM Weight: 32.2 lbs
  • Carriers charge based on the greater of DIM weight or actual weight. In this case, the carrier charges for 32.2 lbs, not the actual weight of 18 lbs.

    After Repackaging:
  • New Box Dimensions: 16" (L) x 14" (W) x 10" (H)
  • Actual Weight: 18 lbs (unchanged)
  • Recalculated DIM Weight: 16.1 lbs
  • Now, the carrier charges for the 18 lbs actual weight, as it no longer exceeded by the DIM weight.

    Consolidation into Pallets

Consolidation is the process of combining multiple items or packages into a single, streamlined shipment. This process involves grouping all repacked items into larger bulk cargo boxes, Gaylord boxes, or pallet corrugated boxes. This step is crucial for reducing shipping costs and is particularly beneficial for international shipments.

Efficient Packing: Repacked packages are carefully arranged within larger pallet-type cardboard containers to eliminate unused space. This maximizes the use of every inch of available room, minimizing wasted volume.

Optimized DIM Weight: Packages are consolidated to keep the dimensional weight (DIM) closely aligned with the actual weight, ensuring the shipment remains cost-effective. The rules for calculating the volumetric weight for bulk consolidated shipments are the same as those for individual itemized packages, meaning carriers use the same formula to determine the DIM weight.

Adherence to Regulations: International shipping guidelines are strictly followed, including limits on dimensions, height, and weight based on carrier requirements.

    Shipment Release

Once your packages have been repacked and consolidated, the final step ensures the shipment is ready for the next stage of its journey. This process emphasizes the seamless transfer of cargo to freight forwarders or carriers.

Ready for Pickup: After consolidation, shipments are carefully labeled, documented, and staged for pickup by your chosen freight forwarder or carrier. Our team ensures all packages are correctly prepared and easily accessible for quick and efficient transfer.

Sea and Air Shipments Coordination: We ensure that all shipments are properly prepared and coordinated based on their designated method of transportation, whether by sea or air.

Proximity to Major Ports: Our Delaware facility is strategically located near key shipping hubs to streamline the transportation process.
  • Port of Newark, NJ: Located just 2 hours from our facility, this port serves as a major gateway for international sea freight.
  • Newark Airport (EWR): A critical hub for international air freight, ideal for high-value or time-sensitive shipments.
  • Beyond Standard Consolidation Services Customers Can Request

Additional Services Tailored to Their Unique Needs

Our fully staffed warehouses are equipped with the necessary tools, materials, and know-how to take care of any special requests you and your customer need. We offer standard consolidation services at a flat fee per kilogram, ideal for routine consolidation tasks. For clients requiring more than standard handling, we provide a range of value-added services priced additionally, according to the specifications of the job. This flexible approach ensures that businesses can choose options that meet their financial and operational needs.

    Photo and Video of Content

We offer photo and video documentation services to capture high-quality images and videos of products, invoices, or packing lists, providing additional verification of content, quality, quantity, and serial numbers of valued items before shipping.

    Custom Repackaging Requests

Some items require more than standard repackaging, whether they are high-value, fragile, or irregularly shaped. We provide customizable solutions, including extra protection, double-boxing, bubble wrap, and stretch wrapping, as per client specifications.

    Short and Long-Term Storage

To support the quick turnaround of shipments, we provide free storage for the first 14 days for all received packages. This allows businesses to manage their shipment schedules without immediate cost implications. After the initial period, a competitive storage fee is applied.

    Oversized and Heavy Goods Handling

Our skilled staff is trained to handle diverse warehouse projects of any complexity, including oversized or overweight packages that require special techniques due to their size and weight. We utilize equipment specifically designed to handle heavy loads in such cases.

Consolidation of Multiple Items into One Package

Combine multiple small items belonging to the same client into a single consolidated box to drastically reduce shipping costs by up to 80%. This approach simplifies logistics for clients with multiple outgoing orders, and reduces the overall number of packages and total weight.

    Bulk or Multiple Orders Reconsolidation

Split bulk or wholesale shipments, as well as multiple orders destined for the same customer—business or individual—into smaller deliveries based on timing needs. It allows the remaining packages to be temporarily stored, to strategically avoid or reduce customs duties.
